The Evolution Of Prostitution Images In Modern Chinese Literature

Since the establishment of patrilineal system, the history of human civilization in a sense has become the one that male conques and suppresses male. The vast majority of women have been excluded in the public domain, A rather small but diverse group of prostitutes is on behalf of them in the social field. As a special group of women, the survival of prostitutes at a certain stage is to a large extent closely related to the social status, marriage and family of the whole women community. Prostitutes system is a Chinese socio-cultural factor that cannot be ignored. Prostitution problem also show different meanings for different combinations of class and gender. So as a literary theme, there is an irreplaceable cultural significance and unique value of literary study.In the modern literature, because of the location changes of modern intellectuals in the social and political power network, the prostitutes were constantly shaped, showing an evolution of images. The thesis proposes to study the prostitutes' images in Modern Chinese Literature as a pedigree by the time that Modern Chinese Literature happened. It mainly concerns about the overlapping of "sex", in particular, women "sex" with the humanism, personality, and other Enlightenment words, nationalist political discourse as well as gender-feminist discourse, considers the changes of Chinese sexual attitudes and sexual morality, the changes of women's status in Chinese society, the changes of Chinese ethical system, the changes in gender power relations, as well as the evolution of China's social structure and social culture in the three decades of Modern Literary.Chapter I focuses on the prostitute images in a perspective of humanism and Enlightenment Reason in Wusi period. Prostitutes in this period beared the rational light and humanitarian sentiments of intellectuals, standed in the masses as suffers or became a metaphor of the writer mentality.Chapter II focuses on the diversified images of prostitutes in the revolutionary era. In this period, China's semi-colonialism and capitalism touched all walks of life and give them enormous impact. According to difference of the war's process, the geopolitical culture and the writers'gender, the prostitute images also showed difference. They are symbols of national integrity, or heroines in trouble who saved the country, or pursuers who had much naked secular desire.
