As a tool of communication, English is much more widely used than before. A learner will not meet the needs of society if he is not able to use English in real life communication. In order to keep up with the development of language teaching, teachers of English are encouraged to adopt the most effective teaching methods. No matter what teaching approach is adopted, it is the ultimate goal to equip the learners with language skills and abilities, so that they can be independent in society. The publication of the latest English Curriculum Standard reinforces the consensus that the final aim for English language teaching is to help students to acquire communicative competence. With the further research of teaching methods, there have been more discussions not only concerning the theoretical basis of the teaching approaches, but also the practical implementation in the classroom activities. The dominant teaching approaches in primary schools, such as TPR, PPP, TBA and etc., which all have their advantages and disadvantages, are not totally suitable for current classroom teaching. Primary school English teachers need a teaching approach which is really reasonable and feasible. In this thesis, the author puts forward an eclectic approach and makes a systematic study on the approach from its origin, definition, theory, basic ideas to its research situation at home and abroad. She also proves the possibility of applying the eclectic approach to primary school English teaching on the aspects of theoretical basis, English learning environment, students'motivation to learn and their characteristics of foreign language acquisition. Under the guidance of the eclectic method the author gives some specific and practical suggestions and makes several complete teaching plans to illustrate the application of the eclectic method to primary teaching of English. In order to prove the effectiveness of the eclectic approach, the author conducts an experiment with the eclectic approach and finds out that: 1) the eclectic approach is more likely to motivate students'interest of English learning; 2) the eclectic approach is more beneficial to cultivate students'comprehensive language competence; 3) the eclectic approach is more helpful to improve classroom teaching efficiency. There may be some incomplete points in this thesis, but the research of the eclectic approach is of great significance to students'language ability improvement and quality education promotion.
