The increasing interdependence of English-speaking countries comes the need for greater efforts to teach Chinese students English—the language of world communication. The low level of communication skills in English among Chinese students is a great concern to the Chinese authorities, for proficiency in communicative English is regarded as essential to the successful implementation of Chinese new economic policy. So the need to adopt or develop an efficient and practical approach to teach English has been considered a high priority for the teaching of English in China. English is a tool for communication and the goal of English teaching is to cultivate and develop the students' ability of using it. Communicative competence has become a heated topic in the field of Chinese foreign language teaching. Therefore, we are in urgent need to put into effect the communicative language teaching in China. In the thesis, the author analyzes the problems existing in English listening and speaking teaching in junior high middle schools today and provide a systematic overview of underlying principles and classroom strategies of communicative language teaching relevant to listening and speaking. Then the author proposes some feasible ways of application of communicative approach to English listening and speaking teaching so as to improve the students' communicative competence.
