Accompanied with the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, their economic and trade cooperation has been closely interconnected, and a lot of outgrowth has been achieved in their trade and the foreign direct investment (FOI) to China made by Japan. In the past three decades, exactly from the time of openness of China, the amount of the trade between the two countries has grown steadily year by year, so has grown the FDI mentioned above. And the FDI, from some aspects, such as the amount and size of the Japanese enterprises planted in China and the industrial structure, has developed in breadth and depth. Until 2005, the amount of trade between China and Japan, according to the statistical number from China's customs office, has reached 184.48 billion USD dollars, as large as 180 times of the amount of 1972, which is 1.04 billon USD dollars. Contemporary, it's the first time that the amount of the Japanese FDI to China contracted exceeded 10 billion US dollars, reached 11.92 billion. At the end of 2005, the accumulative amount of the Japanese FDI to China had reached 78.57 billion US dollars accounted by the contracts, and 53.37billion US dollars recorded by the really received by China, and the number of the projects in the direct investment had reached to 35,124. Japan was one the leading countries of the foreign direct investment in China while it mainly invested in three regions, China, America and Europe. In conclusion, the economic and trade cooperation between China and Japan has developed fast and reached a higher level.However, the progress of the Japanese direct investment in China hasn't been developed smoothly, in different decade , Japanese FDI characterized differently and the strategic mode has been changed , it was deviated when differences of the two countries arose sometimes and accelerated while it put aside.
