While it's a traditional industry of our country, the production of cosmetics has always been an established export trade to earn foreign currency, and the raw materials are the head in its production chain. With China's entry into the WTO, the everlasting development and improvement of Chinese economy as well as the market reform, tariff barriers against foreign-brand cosmetics are lifted. Cosmetics both from the developed countries and other developing countries are vying for the Chinese market, and thus the local cosmetic industries and firms are confronted with severe threats and challenges. On the other hand, the increasing awareness of health and environmental protection poses higher requirement for the survival and development of cosmetic firms too. Chinese cosmetic firms, especially the small and medium-sized ones, are waiting anxiously for answers to better production, management etc, so as to better adapt to the demands from market and social development. The survival and development of cosmetic industry hold realistic significance to the revitalization of China's cosmetics. Based on the field study of Company AA and the author's personal opinions, the thesis strives to bring forward a series of policies and measures to optimize the company's system and management. They are aiming at helping Company AA out of its current slump and of course are just or reference.There are five parts. The first part serves as the introduction to China's cosmetic industry and it's current situation. The second part talks about Company AA and it's current development. The third part analyses Company AA's present production and management. The fourth part, taking the surge of foreign cosmetic brands, the modifications of domestic climate and industrial policies into consideration, analyses the severe challenges brought by the outward changes to the small and middle- sized cosmetic industries and the corresponding measures are also provided. The last part, which is the core of the thesis, is an in- depth case study of Company AA. From the perspective of production and management, it investigates the defects in Company AA's production and management mechanisms; measures for improvement are offered too. Company AA, a traditional state- owned company are to be privatized and brought into the stock market. In terms of marketing, emphasis goes to a higher sense of service, with customers being the center. In terms of management, the managerial function is to be further tapped, the relation between power centralization and division is to be better handled, and effective incentive systems are to be established. The thesis gives special attention to the upgrading and technological innovation of cosmetic industry. Either forge ahead, or the cosmetic firms is to be phased out.Increasing attention is being paid to the survival and development of small and middle- sized cosmetic firms in today's economy. It's already an inseparable part. From its inner management, the thesis discloses and analyses the existing defects and shortcomings of Company AA, while it also points out the possible measures to enhance efficiency and to reform production and management mechanisms. The importance of addressing the necessary management chance is mentioned too. These comments and measures, while being practical and feasible, do have necessary weaknesses due to limited knowledge and practice, and they are to be further deepened and improved in the author's later study and practice.
