With the development of economy and society, a company's internal and external environment is becoming more complicated and the competition is becoming more fiercely. Then, how to meet the needs of customers and improve product quality has become a key to win in the competition. In order to gain competitive advantage, an enterprise must rely on continued product innovation and creativity. In such circumstances, there is a need for finding new product development technologies to develop new product that can bring customer satisfaction.Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a systematic approach that transfers the voice of customers into the designing, manufacturing and production process of products and services. QFD uses a two-dimensional matrix to transfer the customer needs into technology characteristics, which can ensure the quality of products and services that meet the customer needs and bring customer satisfaction.Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) is a knowledge-based, people-oriented, inventional problem-solving methodology. TRIZ is mainly about solving the problem, but is not good at finding the problem. However, QFD can exactly find the problem should be resovled. Therefore, the combination of the two theories can exert both of their advantages, which would promote product design and innovation.Based on QFD and TRIZ theories, this paper proposed a QFD-TRIZ product innovation design model. Through the HOQ (House of Quality) technology, customer needs are transferrd to designers. By translating the importance rate of Customer needs into the importance rate of Quality characteristics, the key points in designing process can be found. HOQ is used to find the contradictions between quality characteristics, while TRIZ is used to analyze, judge and resolve the contradictions. To different type of contradiction, TRIZ contradicton matrix is used to find a solution. This model provides a new thought of sovling problem and invention for developers and designers.In this study, the QFD-TRIZ product innovation design model is applied in a diesel engine product designing process and some key technical indexs are identified. After that, some technical methods are used to solve the contradictions. The application has been approved by the designers. The results of this paper include:(1) Based on the complementary nature of QFD and TRIZ, we proposed a QFD-TRIZ product innovation design model; (2) Applied the new model into a diesel engine designing process. (3) Construct a knowledge database about the customer needs and quality characteristics of the diesel engine.
