Over 30 years of reform and opening up, China has experienced a magnificent growth on the development of economy, especially the traditional manufacturing industry, which has successfully played the role of the “world factory”. But the production efficiency is not high; many companies do not have the modern method on its product improvement design, which is now mainly based on the technology demand within itself, or the passive response to its market feedback, this might lead to an easy loss of target and generate hardly any benefits.Companies using the theory of Value Engineering(VE) and Quality Function Deployment(QFD) theory to guide their product improvement design, has the advantages focusing the target of the improvement on the core value of products and customer demands. On the other hand, one defect is the isolated island effect, it may not go along with the needs of enterprises overall development; the other hand is that, in the specific improvement process, it may lack of effective measures when facing the problem as how to do it.Combine with the practice of high tech corps’ product research and development, this paper proposed a kind of product improvement design method based on the theory of constraints(TOC) and invention theory(TRIZ). This method firstly made clear that the design goal is to maximize the enterprise profit; secondly use TOC’s current reality tree and conflict graph to analyze the status quo, lockdown the core problem that need to be resolved; then introduced the TRIZ material field modeling tools to get the final solution; Finally utilized this proposed method on the practical application of the high speed sewing servo control system improvement design, to verify the validation and practicability of the method.The product improvement design method proposed in this paper, has the advantages as novel, practicable and systematic. First of all, different from the traditional product improvement design and research, which is often limited to the discussion of product functionality, performance or cost, this thesis puts the product improvement design content more focused on the bottleneck of enterprise profit maximization. There are many causes for this bottleneck; it might be the cost, the performance, or even the system. Secondly, the paper analyzed the real business case, through the practical application of this method, successfully focused product improvement as the core problem, at the same time eliminated the technical conflict and enhanced product competition threshold through systematic approaches. Problems described in this case have certain universality for they occurred in reality. And through the successful practice of this proposed method we can say that it has a certain practicability; finally, through TOC and TRIZ theory, follow the three steps as analysis the current situation, position the problem, solve the problems, we can conciliate the conflicts that might emerge on the different stage of product improvement. This method is proven to be systematic and has its integrity.
