Ecotourism will play an important role in Chinese travel industry's development in the 21^st century. Ecotourist area exploration potential evaluation can be defined as the potential capacity of ecotourist area to develop tourism industry and to gain economic, social and environment benefits. It is meaningful for validly protecting and reasonably utilizing tourism resources to assess the exploration potential of ecotourism area. The thesis studies the seashore areas of Jiangsu Province and evaluates the exploration potential and regionalization by combined with its actual development. The purpose is better to enrich and deepen the theory and method of planning of ecotourist area, and to insure the sustainable use of seashore resources. It also has vital theoretical and practical significance to safeguard ecological balance as well as promote harmonious and sustained development in terms of tourism resources, economy, environment and society. At the same time, it acts as a reference with demonstration value with regard to the planning and exploration of our country's ecotourist area and the promotion of ecotourism sustainable development.The thesis is composed of six chapters: Chapter One reviews the research backgrounds and its significances, the research objective and contents, the research methods and directions, as well as the research progress of tourist area. Chapter two introduces the regional profiles of the seashore of Jiangsu Province, the research data and the technological trajectory. Chapter Three detailedly analyses the major influencing factors to evaluate Ecotourist area exploration potential. This paper attempts to establish a index system of exploration potential evaluation for ecotourist area, which composed organically by 3 aspects, namely resources condition, ecological environment and other supporting factors of ecotourism, such as regional social and economic condition, tourism markets, assurance condition. The weights of index coefficients are calculated with the Delphi & Fuzzy-AHP methods. Chapter Four analyses the quantity structure, style characters and spatial-intensified of tourism resources in the seashore areas of Jiangsu Province. On the basis of assessment model, the paper gives a detailed analysis with the example of 100 tourist sites. The grades for Ecotourist area exploration potential can be confirmed. The result shows that the seashore areas of Jiangsu Province can be classified into three high-value sections, which should be developed firstly according to their advantages of resources. And they will promote gradually the development of around areas. It is theoretical foundation for potential regionalization and exploration. Chapter Five put forward 3 levels zoning methods and the measure of how to explore ecotourist areas of the seashore areas of Jiangsu Province by analyzing the spatial structure of different exploration potential ecotourist areas. The last paper undergoes summary and discussion of the major research results, limitation for research and advanced the direction of future research.The thesis emphasizes that the key to explore ecotourism is to evaluate ecotourist areas scientifically. Therefore, it is necessary to breach through the traditional tourist areas evaluation methods, which only appraise tourism resources value and didn't fully consider environment quality and the conditions of developing tourism so that scientific evaluation could hardly be applied to ecotourist areas. Consequently, the thesis establishes a new ecotourist areas exploration potential evaluation index system by combining the speciality and integrity of ecotourist areas and the practical development. Then it applies to appraise the major ecotourist areas in the seashore areas of Jiangsu Province and draws relatively scientific and reliable evaluation results, which thus provides methods and foundation to the scientific evaluation of seashore ecotourist areas, predicting its development potential and determining its development and utility intensity, scales and direction.Considering the aim and principles of regional division of tourism functions, the following issues must be put into consideration: the regional differentiation of natural regions, the principles of multi-level, the discrepancies of tourism resources, the relative integrity of administrative areas, etc. According to the result of testing and assessing, the thesis proposes the project of different potential regions and a strategic guideline for the seashore areas of Jiangsu Province to transform its developing potential into competitive power in the national travel industry. This not only strengthens its confidence in competing for regional and national tourist market, but also provides train of thought and guidelines for the seashore areas of Jiangsu Province to evaluate and improve their own local travel industry.
