Emerging Industries Of The It-driven Formation Mechanism

Information technology (IT) revolution, originated in 1950s, has driven many countries to adjust and upgrade their industrial structure. It has not only fostered the emergency of information industry as the leading industry cluster, but also helped the informationization and convergence of traditional industries.With the development of IT, especially the evolution of internet, CTI and online payment, come many emerging industries like online media and e-commerce. These industries have common characteristics. They are all based on various information technology and they bring in innovation by informationizing the traditional products or operation systems. This also happens to many Chinese companies.Therefore, there is a need for in-depth study on the characteristics, emerging mechanism and law of development on the IT-based emerging industry. There are already some discussions on the emerging mechanism of emerging industries and IT driven industry convergence in China, however, there are no Available theories focused on the emerging mechanism and industrial evolution of IT driven emerging industries. This dissertation is intended to give some discussion on this subject.With the case study on online travel service industry and theory on industry innovation and ecological community evolution, the dissertation gives a model to illustrate the emerging mechanism and industrial evolution of IT-based emerging industry. With the use of this model, the dissertation also gives some suggestions to the innovation plan of AVA Co., a transformer manufacturer.This dissertation has six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the background, literature and framework of the study; Chapter 2 gives the definition of IT-driven emerging industry and analyzes the driving force of IT on industry evolution; Chapter 3, by studying online travel industry from the perspective of industrial innovation, gives the emerging mechanism of IT-driven emerging industry; Chapter 4, by studying industrial evolution of online travel industry, gives the law of development of IT- driven emerging industry; With the model devised in Chapter 3 and 4, Chapter5 gives suggestion to AVA on its innovation plan. Chapter 6 summarizes the findings and limitation of the dissertation.The key innovative points of the dissertation are as follows:1. By using industrial innovation theory together with ecological community evolution and the case study on online travel service industry, this dissertation summarizes a theory model to illustrate the emerging mechanism and ecological community evolution, which can be used by companies and government.2. With the use of the model, the dissertation gives suggestions to AVA on its innovation plan and points out the key driving forces and competition strategy for AVA in order to mitigate its innovation risks and grow its competitive advantages. The model can also be used on other similar company and industries.
