ObjectiveBased on the past observation of the therapeutic effects, the present study was to observe the clinical therapeutic effects of prescription for invigorating spleen and tonifying qi in the treatment of chronic superficial gastritis with the methods of four-diagnosis observation table and scale of quality of life (SF-36 Scaling), with the comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the two assessment methods.MethodsAll the cases of chronic superficial gastritis with spleen qi deficiency syndrome were from the Digestive out-patient department, the First Affiliated Hospital, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, from October,2010 to April,2011, which were applied with the Chinese Materia Medica (with Modified Liu Jun Zi Decoction). Before and after the treatments, the four-diagnosis observation table and SF-36 Scaling table were applied to assess the changes of the clinical symptoms and the improvement of the QOL, with the comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the two assessment methods.Results43 patients in total were enrolled, including 20 male (46.5%) and 23 female (53.5%). With the distribution of the ages, the youngest was 19 years old, the oldest was 55 years; most were between 25 to 40 years old. The results of the four-diagnosis observation table indicated that there were 12 cases cured (27.9%),22 remarkably improved (51.2%),2 ineffective (4.7%), with the total effective rate as 95.3%. With the t test to the total scores before and after treatments, the results showed that there was significant difference (P<0.01). With the comparison of the symptoms before and after treatments, the results of the four-diagnosis observation table indicated that there was significant difference of the 5 symptoms, namely, nausea and vomit, chest suppression, lassitude, preference to sigh, pain of the two regions of ribs (P<0.05), and there was also significant difference of 10 symptoms such as stomach distension or abdominal distension, stomach pain, decreasing food intake, sigh and hiccup, reflux of gastric acid, dry and bitter mouth, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, etc. (P<0.01) before and after treatments. However, there was no significant difference of the yellowish urine (P=0.323). The results of the SF-36 scaling table indicated that the QOL of the patients after the treatments were obviously improved. Among them, the scores of RP, BP, GH, VT, RE and MH were significant improved (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference of the scores of PF and SF.Conclusion1. The prescription of invigorating spleen and tonifying qi has good therapeutic effects in the treatment of chronic superficial gastritis.2. Both the four-diagnosis observation table and the SF-36 scaling table could be applied to assess the clinical therapeutic effects in the treatment of chronic superficial gastritis with spleen qi deficiency syndrome.3. There were advantages and disadvantages in both the four-diagnosis observation table and the SF-36 scaling table in evaluating the clinical effects in the treatment of chronic superficial gastritis with spleen qi deficiency syndrome.
