As an important nutrient, oil of Hippophae rhamnoides(OHR) contains flavone , β- carotene, kinds of vitamine, unsaturated fatty acid, various amino acid and microele-ment. Its antioxidation capacity is known by nutriologists and medical workers andthey have made many studies for a long time. It is knownthat the massive free radicalcan be generated through exercise, which will attack cellular membrane system andcause the malfunction of cells. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect ofOHR supplementation on nutritional status , exercise performance, free - radical - de-fense system, EST isozyme and ultrastructure of liver, myocardium and brain oftrained rnice and to propose some reference for the development and exploration ofOHR as sports food.90 male ICR mice were randomly divided into two groups: sedentary and traininggroups. Each group was divided into control and OHR supplernentation subgroups re-spectively. Body weights of these mice were taken twice a week. Training groups car-ried out a 6 - week swimming program with gradually increasing intensity and an ex-haustive swimming before sacrifice. The trained mice were sacrificed in four condi-tions: immediately after exhaustive exercise in control group(IEC), immediately afterexhaustive exercise in OHR supplementation group(IEO), 24 - hour's recovery afterexhaustive exercise in control group(REC), 24 - hour's recovery after exhaustive ex-ercise in OHR supplementation group(REO). Serum GOT and GPT, SOD and MDAin liver, kidney, heart, quadriceps femoris and brain are measured; EST isozyme ofthose tissue are studied by using PAGE; the change of ultrastructure of liver, my-ocardium and brain are observed by transmission electron microscope(TEM). The re-sults indicate:1 ) OHR groups mice' appetite is not affected by OHR and they grow very well.2) In immediately after exhaustive exercise groups, serum GOT and GPT are oflower significant in OHR group than in control group.3) In sedentary and immediately after exhaustive exercise groups, SOD activity inliver are higher remarkably in OHR groups than in control groups. In immediately af-ter exhaustive exercise, SOD activity in kidney, myocardium, quadriceps femoris andbrain appear the same as liver. The concentration of MDA in these tissue are signifi-cantly lower in OHR groups than in control groups.4)Different kinds of tissue show different levels of SOD and MDA in same condi-tion;the same kind of tissue in dfferent condition shows different levels of SOD andMDA either,which indicates their different abilities of antioxidation.5) Comparing with control groups, EST isozyme's zymograms and intensity inOHR groups appear adaptive enhancement.6) Integrity of Mi, RER and My in liver, myocardium and brain are better .inOHR groups than in control groups and the pathological tendency of these ultrastruc-ture is lighter in OHR groups comparing with control groups.So the conclusion is reached: OHR supplementation can increase swimming per-formance significantly, reduce damage of liver and myocardium caused by exercise andenhance antioxidative status of some kinds of tissue; OHR supplementation and en-durance training induce EST isozyme of liver, kidney, myocardium, quadriceps femorisand brain appearing adaptive enhancement; OHR supplementation can protect ultra-stucture of liver, myocardium and brain.
