The effects of Aloe is related to many components, which include various amino acid, peptide, antioxidation enzyme, mineral elements, vitamines, flavone as rutin, organacid, polysaccharide, alkaloid and hormone and so on. Lots of researching achievements aboutaloe have made in many fields such as daily expenses, medicine, cosmetology, healthcare, fcodstuff, etc. These studies show that aloe has a role of antioxidation and thera-peutic effects, which is interrelated with getting rid of free radical. It is known that themassive free radical can be generated through exercise, which will attack cellular mem-brane system 'and cause the malfunction of cells. The purpose of this study is to investigatethe effects of aloe supplementation on nutritional status, exercise performance, free - rad-ical - defense system, ultrastructure of liver and myocardium in trained mice l and put for-ward some reference for the development and exploration of aloe as sports food. The methods: 90 male mice were randomly divided into two groups: sedentary andtraining groups. Each group was divided into control and aloe supplementation subgroupsrespectively. Body weights of these mice were taken twice a week. Traininag groups car-ried out a 6 - week swimming program with gradually increasing intensity and an exhaus-tive swimming before sacrifice. The trained mice were sacrificed in four conditions: imme-diately after exhaustive exercise in control group, immediately after exhaustive exercise inoral administration of aloe group, 24 - hour s recovery after exhaustive exercise in controlgroup, 24 - hour's recovery after exhaustive exercise in aloe administration group. SerumAST, ALT, BUN, LDH, CK and Glu, Hb in blood, SOD, GSH - Px, MDH and capa-bility of total antioxidation were measured; the changes of ultrastructure of liver and my-ocardium were observed by transmission electron microscope(TEM).The results show:l )Aloe groups mice's appetite is not affected by aloe and they grow very well.2) In immediately after exhaustive exercise groups, concentration of Hb, levels ofsGlu and glycogen in liver and myocardium are of higher significanll in aloe group than incontrol group' In 24 - hour's recovery groups, these indexs are of higher signifi cance inaloe group than in control group.3)In immediately after exhaustive exercise, serum AST, ALT, BUN, LDH anda)In immediately after exhaustive exercise, serum AST, ALT, BUN, LDH andl -- 3 -5CK are of lower significant in aloe groups than in control groups. In 24 -- hour's recoveryafter exhaustive exercise groups, these indexes significantly drop in aloe group than incontrol group.4) In immediately after exhaustive exercise groups, SOD and GSH -- Px activity andcapability of total antioxidation are higher remarkably in aloe group than in coutrol group, but the concentration of MDA is evidently lower. In 24 -- hour's recovery after exhaustivegroups, SOD and GSH -- Px activity and capability of total antioxidation are still highersignificant in aloe group than in control rgoup, while the concentration of MDA decreaseremarkably in aloe group comparing with control group.5)Different kinds of tissue show the different levels of SOD, GSH -- Px, MDA andcapability of tQtal antioxiation; the same kind of tissue in different condition shows differ-ent levels of SOD, GSH -- Px, MDA and capability of total antioxidation, which indicatestheir (1ifferent abilities of antioxidation.6) Integrity of Mi, RER and My in liver and myocardium is better in aloe groupsthan in control groups and the pathological tendency of these ultrastructure is lighter inaloe groups than in control groups. The conclusion: oral administration of aloe can increase swimming perfOrmance sig-nificantly, reduce damage of liver and myOCardium caused by exercise and enhance antiox-idative function of some kinds of tissue; aloe supplementation and endurance training canprotect ultrastructure of liver and my...
