AbstractObjective To inquire into the diagnostic and clinical significance of the animus in the functional constipation and evaluate the effect of biofeedback therapy. Methods The patients were divided into two groups, anismus and non-anismus constipation by the EMG activity of voluntary anal sphincter. A comparative study was conducted by observing the outcomes of the two groups after the tests of anorectal neurophysio logy, manometry, and defecography. Part of the patients with anismus were treated by biofeedback therapy. Before and after the treatment their anal EMG activities were assessed. Results The patients in anismus group showed lower sensation threshold (P < 0.05)and stronger compliance (P< 0.0l)of rectum contrast to whom in non-anismus group, The rest-pressure and contract-pressure of anal canal were markedly higher in the anismus groups(P <0.01) .The pressure grad of anal canal showed up-tendency in anismus patients which reversed to the patients in non-anismus group. Anorectal angel and UAD showed significant differences in two groups(P<0.05).The clinic complains also showed differences in the two groups. After the treatment of BF therapy, the patients with anismus showed an extremely improvement both in symptom and EMG proofs. (p<0.01).Conclusion Anismus presents clinical characteristics in constipation. Biofeedbacktherapy can be recommend to the patients with anismus.
