The prevention and cure effect of the alcohol extract of Herba Hedrotis diffusa(AEH) on experimental diabetic rats neurphathy were tested. The AEH was obtained by extracting Herba Hedrotis diffusa with ethanol and chloroform. After 4 weeks, experimental diabetic model (DM) was induced by i. p. rats Streptozotocin (STZ), DM rats were administrated with the AEH 0. 1g/kg, 0.2g/kg for 4 weeks, blood glucose, peripheral nerve function and indicators related to diabetic neurphathy were determined. The results showed that the AEH decreased significantly thermagesia threshold, increased both sensony and motor conduction velocity of sciatic nerve, shorten the incubation period of evoked electromygrapy and increased amplitude action potential; The AEH decreased significantly aldose reductase activity in the nerve of DM rats. The AEH 0.2g/kg decreased significantly erythrocyte sorbitol and serum nitric oxide level in DM rats. The AEH could improve peripheral nerve function in diabetic neurphathy. The results suggested that the AEH defect diabetic neurphathy by inhibitingaldose reductase activity to decrease associatedtissue or organ injuries caused by accumulation ofsorbitol, and the effect may be related withdecreseing injuries caused by excssive productionof nitric oxide in DM rats .
