As an important component of the world medicine, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) is a great treasure house. With the outward communication of the medicine, the magic clinical therapeutic effect and unique theory system of TCM has arisenthe international focus with daily frequent communication. In order to accuratelyintroduce the theory, practice, & scientific and research achievements to theoverseas, to help foreign TCM learners correctly understand, to promote theinternational academic exchange, we can say that English translation of TCM is thebridge of TCM to the world. So the standardization of English translation of TCMis emergent. "Translation is a recreation." The study of the standardization of Englishtranslation of TCM is an important link in improving the translation quality. IbelievethatthestandardizationandnormalizationwillhelpforeignlearnersbetterunderstandTCM,promotetheoutwardexchangeandthemodernizationofTCM,comecloseto the world medicine better. So the contents in this thesis were divided into four parts. The 1st part isintroduction, points out that "In the practice of TCM in her outward spread, therestillexistsomanyproblemstobesolvedinthelanguageasthecommunicationtool".The 2nd part includes the contents from the 1st chapter to the 8th chapter, whichanalyses and sorts out all the English translation of TCM in many journals and bookspublishedathome.Itisdividedintotwoparts,i.e.TCMandChinesematerialmedica,and discussed. TCM part is divided into 4 sections:ⅰEnglish translation of basicterminology of theory in TCM;ⅱEnglish translation of disease name and syndrome namein TCM diagnostics;ⅲEnglish translation of terminology in acupuncture;ⅳEnglishtranslation of classic works in TCM. Chinese material medica is divided into 3sections:ⅴEnglish translation of basic terminology in Chinese material medica;ⅵEnglish translation of single herb in Chinese material medica; ⅶEnglishtranslation of TCM fomula. The 3rd part includes the 8th chapter, it classifies andgathers many methods of English translation of TCM, lists the applied circumstanceof all the methods and the problems existing in all the translation methods. Onlywhen we expertly and comprehensive use all methods according to concrete languagecircumstance, we can accurately express the information borne by TCM terminology. In English translation of TCM, with serious attitude, we require not only toaccuratelyexpresstheTCMcontents, butalsoaccordwiththeinherentlawsofEnglishlanguage, paying attention to the style and literary form flexibility andintelligently without dogma. The 4th part includes the content from the 8th chapterto the 9th chapter, points out that English translation of TCM needs unificationand standardization macroscopically, that TCM translators should be proficient inbasic theory in TCM and her characteristics, as well as modern medicine. At the sametime, they should grasp abundant knowledge in ancient literature, history andphilosophy. Besides, they should master English at higher level, experiencedtranslation skills and written characteristics in accord with the Englishman andAmericans with excellent competence and strong heart for career. TCM and Westernmedicine root in two kinds of different cultural medical system. So the concept that"Comparison of TCM and Western medicine, i.e. the comparison of scientific formsin medical theoretical system, is essentially the comparison of different culturein China and the West" is raised in 10th and 11th chapter. Therefore, the outwardexchange of English translation of TCM is essentially the export of traditionalculture. The translators is necessary to introduce and spread the culture embodiedin the source language in translating. In conclusion, successful translators should have strong culturalconsciousness, realize that translating is the information exchange leaping overthe wording, leaping over the culture. But the difference in culture, quite similarto the difference in language may become the obstacle of communication. So whenrealizing the language translating, we must overcome the obst...
