Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Cold-Induced Diseases) is a masterpiece, which has made contributions to Chinese medical history. It is a medical book that first makes the concept of syndrome differentiation into practice. When he sees a patient, a doctor of Chinese medicine usually picks out a set of symptoms among the whole disorders and gives it a name of syndrome, which is specifically meaningful.Doctors of Western medicine have different views when they treat patients. After a series of diagnosis they know the etiology and disease progress. But doctors of Chinese medicine have different approaches. If they model on the Western diagnostic methods mechanically , it is difficult for them to write out a formula. They often collect a series of symptoms, and then classify them into several patterns that represent the main disease cause and pathogenesis. This is known as the main syndrome, and the secondary cause, pathogenesis and site of disease are called the associated syndrome. In addition, those that cannot completely represent the cause, pathogenesis and site of disease are named as symptoms. Shanghan Lun is the first great monograph which discusses about treatment based on the six-meridian syndrome differentiation, in which the complicated febrile diseases are systematized according to syndrome differentiation. As a result, formula-syndrome rules are created.Let's take Guizhi Tang as an example in analysis, as it is the most important formula in Shanghan Lun. Taiyang disease is not only discussed in detail, but also has a wide coverage. Therefore, a systematic analysis of Guizhi Tang with its related formulas is under research. It has been found that many formulas, in appearance, are not related to each other, but actually they are of the same family, and later more formulas based on them are worked out. Some are viewed as their branch formulas, and some are distant ones. Anyway, they are of the family-similar formulas. In the family formulas, each one has its own individuality. For instance, in terms of Guizhi Tang, the proportion of the chief herbs and adjacent herbs is very important. When there is different proportion of them, the nature of the family formulas is different too. If there is no change of the proportion of Ramulus Cinnamoni and Radix Paeoniae, its indication is disharmony between the ying and wei phases, but when the proportion of Ramulus Cinnamoni is increased, the formula works to activate heart-yang. When the proportion of Radix Paeoniae is increased , an interior syndrome is treated. When Ramulus Cinnamoni and Herb Ephedrae are put together, the formula can relieve wind-cold. When Ramulus Cinnamoni and Semen Persicae or Herb Asari...
