Objective To assess the feasibility and efficacy of transarterial lidocaiue-lipiodol emulsion administration for controlling abdominal pain during transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) therapy of hepatic cancer. Methods 70 cases with hepatic carcinoma who underwent TACE were divided into three groups , those who received lidocaine-lipiodol emulsion administration(group A. n=20), those who received lidocaine bolus intraarterial infusion immediately before TACE(group B, n=38), those who received lidocaine injection during TACE(group C, n=12). The degree of pain during TACE was evaluated by Wong-Baker Faces, The doses of lipiodol during TACE and analgesics after TACE were recorded. Results The degree of pain among the three groups showed significant difference(P<0.05). The scores of pain of group A is the lowest. The incidence rate of these patient, who had to receive intramuscular analgesics for controlling intolerable pain after TACE, were not significantly diference among three groups. Conclusions Transarterial administration of lidocaine-lipiodol emulsion can relieve pain during TACE.
