Objective: By philology study of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this article aims to explore the pattern of formulas used for treating Dysmenorrhea, as well as to explore the disease pattern of Dysmenorrhea.Method: (1) 425 Dysmenorrhea formulas collected from essential references of TCM formulas, such as the Formula Dictionary of Traditional Chinese, and from relevant medical publications. (2) Analyze the composition of herbs in formulas by using software EXCEL. (3) Derive the most common disease pattern with reference to the use of herbs in the formulas.Results: (1) The 10 most common disease patterns in Dysmenorrhea include: stagnation of qi and blood; blood stasis due to cold accumulation; blood stasis in Bao Gong; stagnation of heat and blood; stagnation and deficiency of blood and qi; stagnation of qi due to deficiency of blood; cold accumulation of thoroughfare and controlling vessels with stagnation of qi and blood; kidney deficiency with blood stasis; cold accumulation in Bao Gong with stagnation of qi and blood; cold accumulation due to blood deficiency with stagnation of qi and blood. (2) The 10 most common herbs used: Danggui; Chuanxiong; Yanhusuo; Baishao; Xiangfu; Gancao; Rougui; Honghua; Wulingzi; Wuyao. The pattern of formulas is mainly the combination of the above herbs. Conclusion: The disease pattern of Dysmenorrhea is mainly repletion pattern and vacuity-repletion pattern. The basic composition in formulas is the promoting circulation medicinal, supplementing medicinal, warming medicinal, heat-clearing medicinal, clear-dampness prescription, expel-exterior evil medicinal. The most commonly used herbs are Danggui; Chuanxiong; Yanhusuo; Baishao; Xiangfu; Gancao; Rougui; Honghua; Wulingzi; Wuyao.
