.1997-2004 Shanxi Birth Defect Monitoring

Objective: analyzing the situation for comprehensive level, time, and location of birth defect's occurrence among of the past eight years and concluded the experience of intervention on birth defect in our province for past eight years, and provide the evidence for implementing intervention of birth defect and establishing prepotency policy.Method: Adopting the monitoring project of focusing on hospital monitor, and publicity monitor included, monitoring all defects babies(Including the live, the dead, or died within 7 days of birth) which produced in hospitals (included all kinds of medical care agency with condition of deliver a child), or at home in all 119 counties of Shanxi Province from 1997 to 2004. Every month well-trained monitors are in charge of monitoring the situation of birth, statistic and fill in"Quarter Report Sheet on Babies"; if the defect founded, after confirmation, the monitors fill in"The defect babies register card", all report sheets will be checked then concluded by all Health Care Institute focused on The women and the babies and report quarterly to Provincial Institute, then checked again, inputting to computer, establishing database for analysis.Result: From 1997 to 2004, the total monitored babies amount to 1469324, birth defects babies reach to 20334, the probability is 138.39 per ten thousand of people. Among of them, 65.3 per ten thousand of people belong to nerve function defect. There is obvious difference (P<0.05)between the rural and the urban. There was no difference in birth defects'incidence rate of different gender(P>0.05).From 1997 to 2004, the comprehensive occurrence possibility and Nerve Tube Defects(NTDs) occurrence possibility appear a decrease trend year by year, moreover, the scope keep the same. By the distribution of location, from 1997 to 2004, there existed difference between 11 different cities on the comprehensive occurrence possibility of birth defect and Nerve Tube Defects(NTDs) occurrence possibility, and rose abnormally in certain year.Conclusion: From 1997 to 2004, the comprehensive occurrence possibility and Nerve Tube Defects(NTDs) occurrence possibility appear a decrease trend year by year, moreover, the scope keep the same. There is obvious difference (P<0.05)between the rural and the urban.
