Body image is the subjective concept of one's physical appearance. Many people endorse body image dissatisfaction to some extent. However, among those who have severely negative body image, some people are actually sufferers of a kind of psychiatric disorder—body dysmorphic disorder. Since the 1980s, western scholars have been carrying out system research on this disorder. In China, the related research initiated ten years ago.The main purpose of this study is as follows: (a) to investigate the body image status and occurrence of body dysmorphic disorder in undergraduates and patients seeking plastic surgery; (b) to explore the relationship between self esteem, personality, depression and body image, body dysmorphic disorder; (c) to review influence factors of body dysmorphic disorder, basing on interviews with sufferers.The results of the study are as follows: (a) a total of 53. 15% of the undergraduates endorse body image dissatisfaction, and 22.94% are preoccupied by their appearance, 5. 32% appear to meet DSM-FV criteria for body dysmorphic disorder; the body image status of undergraduates is influenced by gender and speciality; (b) a total of 9. 55% of the patients seeking plastic surgery appear to meet DSM- IV criteria for body dysmorphic disorder; (c) the severity of negative body image and self esteem indicate negative correlation; (d) sufferers of body dysmorphic disorder show low self esteem and some personality traits; (e) sufferers of body dysmorphic disorder show more serious depression than other people who endorse body image dissatisfaction; (f) factors such as family, media, negative appraisal or criticism of appearance from others may influence the occurrence of body dysmorphic disorder.
