Achyranthes bidentata Bl. (Amarathaceae) is a traditional Chinese medicine, which has been collected in Pharmacopoeia of the PRC and is widely distributed in He Nan, Shan Xi, Shan Dong, Jiang Su, An Hui Province, et al. It has the effects of dissipating blood stasis, subducing inflammation, nourishing the liver and kidney, strengthening the bones and muscles, et al and is used for the treatment of osteodynia of lumbar and knees, spasm and flaccidity of limbs and so on.By various chromatographic methods, 10 compounds were isolated from the EtOH extract of A. bidentata Bl.. On the basis of analysis of UV, NMR, and MS spectral data, they were identified as : achyranthesterone B ( 1~*), stachysterone A (2), podecdysone C (3),β-ecdysterone (4), 25-R inokosterone (5), 25-5 inokosterone (6). stachysterone D (7), daucosterol (8),β-sitosterol (9), oleanolic acid (10). Among them, the compound 1 was a new phytosterone; compounds 2 and 3 were first isolated from Achyranthes bidentata Bl.; compound 5 and 6 were epimers. The bioactivities investigated in vitro by MTT method showed that only compound 1 had the activity of anti-tumor.A review on the comparative analysis of the chemical constituents and pharmacological action of Achyranthes bidentata BL, Cyathula officinalia Kuan and Achyranthes fauriei was given on the basis of references.
