Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bge. belongs to the family Liliaceae widely distributed in China. Its rhizome has been used as a folk medicine for treatment of febrile diseases with high fever and dire thirst: heat in the lung with dry cough; consumptive fever; diabetes due to internal heat; constipation in China. It has been reported that steroidal saponins were the main active components. In these years, there are so many articles to report about the timosaponin and sarsasapogenin. The author has investigated the chemical constituents and its quality determination of the rhizoma anemarrhenae. In this thesis, the chemical constituents of the extracts with 70 % ethanol-water from the rhizoma anemarrhenae were studied, 16 compounds were isolated with silica gel, ODS, Sephadex LH-20 and preparative HPLC. etc. On the basis of analysis of spectroscopic data and measuring of physico-chemical characters, the chemical structures of 14 compounds were elucidated as timosaponin A IV(1), timosaponin B VII(2). timosaponin B I (3), macrostemonoside F (4), timosaponin BIII(5), timosaponin B II(6), sarsasapogenin (7). monomethyl-cis- hinokiresinol(8). cis-hinokiresinol(9), 2,6,4'-trihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone(10), mangiferin(11), 7-O-glucopyranosyl mangiferin (12),β-sitosterol (13), daucosterol (14). Of all these compounds, compound 1 and 2 were new compounds, and compound 4 was isolated for the first time from rhizoma anemarrhenae. An RP-HPLC method for determination of timosaponin BIII in rhizoma anemarrhenae is established and to provide the basis for quality specification of the rhizoma anemarrhenae.
