This study is composed of two parts, the reference review part and the clinic research.1 Reference reviewIn this part, the current situation of the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis and stagingcriterion, means of prevention and treatment of diabetic nephropathy were reviewed, andthe current situation of syndrome differentiation of TCM were elaborated. In this part, thesystematic summarization of the current standardization research state of TCM syndromesof diabetic nephropathy was conducted so as to introduce new ideas and methods in thestandardization research of TCM syndromes.2 Clinic studyObjective: This study investigated the characteristics of TCM syndrome of diabeticnephropathy according to the theory of disease differentiation combined with syndromedifferentiation, using the means of data mining such as cluster analysis and scale-freenetworks so as to provide evidence for diagnose and treatment of different stages ofdiabetic nephropathy through different symptoms and signs, illuminate rules for TCMresearch, and to discuss the feasibility of syndrome classification by using the scale-freenetworks built on association rules. Methods: This study analyzed 213 cases of in-patients with DN secondary to type 2diabetes mellitus retrospectively, who came from endocrinology department of eighthospitals in Beijing. Patients were divided intoⅢ,Ⅳ,Ⅴstages based on the Mogensencriteria, and the characteristics of TCM syndromes of each stage were explored by datamining methods such as cluster analysis, Scale-Free Networks built on association rules, etal. Results: The characteristics of TCM syndrome of diabetic nephropathy are quitedifferent among different stages of the disease: The characteristics of TCM syndrome ofstageⅢdiabetic nephropathy is qi and yin deficiency, sometimes accompanied by interiorheat or blood stasis syndrome; the characteristics of TCM syndrome ofⅣstage is qi andyin deficiency with blood stasis, sometimes accompanied with damp-heat or interior heatsyndrome; while the characteristics of TCM syndrome of stageⅤis qi, blood, yin andyang deficiency, accompanied with blood stasis and damp-turbidity. Further more, with theprogress of the disease, the clinic symptom multiplied, and the syndrome become morecomplicated. Conclusion: The essential characteristic of traditional Chinese medical of diabeticnephropathy is deficiency in root and excess in branch, mainly deficiency of qi and yin. With the progress of the disease, the deficiency of yang appeared, yin and yang deficiencyhave become the basic characteristics of TCM syndrome of stageⅤ. The accompanied branch excess syndrome varies according to different stages, and blood stasis is the maincategory of assident syndrome through the whole course of DN.
