Objective DC (diabetic cardiopathy) and DN (diabetic nephropathy) are common and serious complication of diabetes mellitus. Relatively few of the investigations on the relationship of DC and DN have been reported. By studying the clinical examination results and the syndrome of DC and DN, we try to analyze the characteristics of the relationship of DC and DN from the standpoint of the activity of Yang-Qi, in order to deepen cognition on the relationship of the main complications of diabetes mellitus, provide references for treating DC based on syndrome differentiation and treating diabetes mellitus clinically.Method Our study analyzed 324 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus hospitalized patients in The First Hospital affiliated to Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine from October 2007 to March 2009. These patients cases were divided to two groups:DN group (n=168, patients with DN) and non-DN group (n=156, patients without DN). We formulated unified questionnaires, observed clinical examination indices of DC, such as cardio-thoracic proportion, electrocardiogram, dynamic electrocardiogram, ultrasonic cardiogram, treadmill exercise test and coronal artery angiography. We compared the differences of them between DN group and non-DN group to explore the relationship between DN and DC. Then we analyzed the difference of single pattern in DN and DC groups to explore the effect of Yang-Qi on the pathogenesis of DN, that provide theoretical basis for treating diabetes mellitus with warming Yang-Qi.Results The cardio-thoracic proportion in DN group is higher than non-DN group significantly (P<0.05). Electrocardiogram:QT interval in DN group is longer than non-DN group (P<0.05), and the incidence rate of arrhythmia and ST-T change in DN group is higher than non-DN group (P<0.05). Dynamic electrocardiogram:EF value in DN group is lower than non-DN group obviously (P<0.05); LAD, LVD, LSD and LVP in DN group is higher than non-DN group significantly (P<0.05). In DN group, the rate of the pattern of deficient Yang-Qi takes up 44.0%, which is higher than non-DN group remarkably (P<0.05).Conclusions The heart damage in DN group is more seriously than non-DN group, and the proportion of the pattern of deficient Yang-Qi in DN group shows much higher than non-DN group, suggesting the relationship between DN and DC, that is closely related to the development of the basic pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus, deficient Yang-Qi. Therefore, in clinical, we should emphasize that deficient Yang-Qi is the root of diabetes mellitus, and do not abuse severe cold or bitter cold medicine.
