Vancomycin And Liquid Gentamicin Bone Cement In Vitro Drug Release Studies

Objective To compare the drug release of vancomycin bone cement with liquid gentamicin and without and to provide the theory basis for the clinical practice.Methods The specimens of bone cement each of 40g with 1g vancomycin were divided into 2 groups, group 1 with 160mg liquid gentamicin and group 2 without anything served as a control. The elution examination of vancomycin from bone cement was performed by UV spectrophotometer.Results The release rule of drug from the antibiotic bone cement with liquid gentamicin was similar with bone cement without gentamicin and vancomycin elution was enhanced by 51% with the addition of gentamicin liquid.Conclusions with liquid gentamicin in vancomycin bone cement are to be an effective additive to promote the release of antibiotics.
