Objective:To evaluate the effect of different size xylitol on the release of vancomycin from antibiotic bone cement and to provide the theory basis for the clinical practiceBackground:In Clinical bone cement containing antibiotics have been widely used in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis and soft tissue infections, because they can produce high local concentrations of antibiotics and medication to avoid systemic side effects According to the release rate of antibiotics in bone cement porosity, increasing an additive to increase its porosity in order to increase the release of antibiotics The size of the current additive effect on the release of antibiotics is unclear. Methods:The experiment was performed in two steps; In step one, the specimens of bone cement each of 40g with 1g vancomycin were divided into 4 groups depending on different size xylitol, groupⅠwith 210um-250um xylitol, groupⅡwith 425um-500um xylitol, groupⅢwith 800um-1000um xylitol and groupⅣwithous any xylitol served as control.the elution examination of vancomycin from bone cement was performed by UV spectrophotometry. Results:the release rule of drug from the antibiotic bone cement with xylito was similar with the bone cement withous xylito:After waterfall force arrangement release at the first day, plummets releases continually for several days. The release of vancomycin of the 210um-250um xylitol group was more effective than other each group (P<0.05) and the release of vancomycin was not too fast. Conclusions:with low-cost and antibacterial activity, xylitol particles are to be an effective additive to promote the release of antibiotics.
