The Scarlet Letter is the most important novel of Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the most outstanding American romanticists in the nineteenth century,as the mature embodiment of his literary thoughts and art ,has aroused much attention and received criticism in literary circle ever since its publication in 1850. The perplexity,complexity and contradiction of Hawthorne's thoughts determined his fictions cover some subjects with more complex and contradictory implications besides those general ones. His works aim to seek"good and evil","love and hatred","crime and redemption"in humanity and describe, as well as,the psychological evolution course of human ethics. Scholars have given variety of readings to it by employing different critical approaches. This novel convey a very strong sense of religious attribute, the leading role Hester's life is full of exclusion and massacre of paganism and Puritanism's oppression and devastation of humanity. There are a lot of wonderful depictions in the novel, many scholars and critics analyze characters on the view of psychology point. Besides as a good story-writer, Hawthorne has linguistic skills, which have invited many scholars'attentions.There exist both temporal and spatial dimensions in literary works, but in traditional studies, people have neglected the latter. Now, it's time to attach importance to studies on spatial dimension in literary works. In fact, narratology studies today are confronted with"spatial turn", in the twenty century spatial form theory is brought forward. This paper analysesThe Scarlet Letter through the theory of Joseph Frank and other theorists. The paper is composed of five parts. The first part is the introduction of the paper. This part mainly introduces Nathaniel Hawthorne's status in both American and the world literary history, and summarizes the purpose and significance of this paper. The first chapter is the second part, make a brief presentation of the spatial form theory and point out the precise value of understanding of The Scarlet Letter. The third part is the second chapter, discussing the physical space in the novel and help meaning of the physical space in impulse the development of the story. The fourth part, the third chapter of the paper,analyzes the space narrative structure of the novel; the fifth part summarizes the whole paper, and readers could appreciate the narrative skill employed, enjoy its artistic effects.
