In the history of Chinese American literature,there are many brilliant writers,and Amy Tan is one of those.Her first work The Joy Luck Club won many titles for her and laid the solid foundation for her in Chinese-American literature.The subsequent series of novels cemented her unshakable position in the history of Chinese American literature.The thesis mainly focuses on her fourth novel The Bonesetter's Daughter,which is regarded as the most auto-biographical work in the academic field.This novel mainly uses the dating-back way to reveal the love-hate feelings among three generations.This novel bears some similar themes with the previous ones: the complex ties between mothers and daughters and cross-cultural communication.In addition,The Bonesetter's Daughter is considered to be the classic mode on the ethnics.The “voiceless phenomenon” clearly reveals the Chinese-American's living conditions and their position in the American society.The thesis studies The Bonesetter's Daughter from perspective of Lefebvre's space theory.Through perusing physical space,social space and psychological space,the purpose of thesis is to reveal women's living conditions and their psychological representation.There are close relationships between their living conditions and the three spaces.Physical space is a hint or a metaphor for their social status and fate.Social space reveals the unequal relations that they are bearing under the mainstream ideology.Psychological space is a subjective experience and response to physical space and social space.Therefore,these three kinds of spaces are not independent but inextricably linked.Relatively speaking,social space is the dominant space,because both the physical space and the person's psychological space are affected by the mainstream ideology in the social space,and the physical space is an objective and material reflection of this ideology,and the psychological space is a subjective experience and initiative reflection of the social place.
