Disgrace is one of the masterpieces of Coetzee, a contemporary white writer of South Africa. It roots in the society of South Africa, presenting in social transition, the disruption and reconstruction of racial and gender elements and also characters’ psychological journey of trauma and pursuit of freedom under this macro-social background. This thesis chooses the perspective of Lefebvre’s spatial theory, through intensive reading, taking space as clues of works, to explore cultural and social connotations of space and characters’ spiritual baptism behind transference and the renovation of space. The transference, intrusion and construction of physical space present characters suffered dual oppression in races and genders, In social space, the collapse of white civilization is accompanied with double resistance of race and gender. In psychological space, living dilemma produced complicated and multiple moods. Inner choices help them conquer the living hardship and convert dilemma into chances of development through self-redemption and self-adaptation.The creativity of the thesis lies in that it disrupts the traditional grand narration and binary opposition and shifts the concern to common people and explores the spatial significance of blank and silence. In addition, it uses three main lines depicting the reformation of characters’inner world and points out that inner choices play the key role in solving conflicts.
