Xiao Hong aspires for independent personality and spiritual freedom all through her life. Both her life and novels which have brought us endless impulse of exploration and pleasure have become an unduplicated and eternal realistic existence. During her transitory writing career no more than ten years, she attempts to present ordinary being's and even all human beings existing circumstances and living truth. Relying on the deep-felt experience of life, she goes deep into human nature, exploring the insult and harm brought to human beings by society, history and traditional culture. Adopting in the way of intensive reading the thesis bases on the studies all of Xiao Hong's works from the perspective of theme and connotation, the author specially analyses the representative works of Xiao Hong, aiming to illustrate the development and changes, as well as main features in her works.The thesis falls into three parts. The first part is about the basic theme of Xiao Hong's novel. It mainly comprises three points:changing venation of the theme, mainline running through the creation, the writing themes influenced by learning from Lu Xun and her journey to Japan. The second and the third part analyses Xiao Hong's representative novels. The works can be divided into two groups based on chronological order and the subtle differences presented in her novels; namely earlier stage and later stage. (1936 is the boundary of time) Works of earlier stage include some short stories and the novelette field of life and death. These works lead to be loose and blurry in theme. The works in her later stage include some short stories such as, The Story of Hulan River, Henri Maspeero, Spring In a Small Town, Backyard Garden, The Story of Red Glass and so on. Her literary creation became mature in this period. The cultivation and exploration of the complicated human nature, of society and history and traditional culture have become the core motivation of her production and the themes of her novels have become even more centralized and distinctive.
