As a modern composition Zhang Shuai's"Three Preludes"for solo piano calls for our attention. In the process of analyzing the work the author discovers that the main themes of the preludes are independent for one another while sharing some connection in terms of basic materials. Its structure is that of the ternary form and its harmonic language heavily relies on Western technique. Though the melodies are pentatonic in general the piece is quite chromatic, combined with rhythmic elements from jazz, giving it a nationalistic and exotic flavor. It possesses something that is classical with a popular touch.
