| Objective:Personality is closely related to mental health. In recent years, the correlative study between the characteristics of college students'personalities and mental health has become a hot topic. However, the studies based on Five-Pattern Personality and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) are relatively fewer and those based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are rare in China. The present study was intended to analyze the effects of SCL-90 factors on Five-Pattern Personality by ANNs, explore the underlying rules and give some suggestions. The study aimed to reveal the correlation between personality characteristics and mental health, thus providing theoretical and practical guidance to effective education on the characteristics of college students" personalities and mental health, and personal prevention and intervention. Methods:Based on Five-Pattern Personality and SCL-90, a questionnaire was conducted on 672 students from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine by, and the results were analyzed by T-test. The effects of SCL-90 factors on Five-Pattern Personality were analyzed by ANNs. The total scores of the 10 factors of SCL-90 were selected as input variables and those of the five dimensions in Five-Pattern Personality were selected as output variables for ANNs, with 1 hidden layer and 5 hidden nodes. Results:â‘ In all the samples, the scores of greater yang, less yang, less yin and greater yin personalities were significantly lower than national norm (P<0.01),while the scores of balanced yin-yang personality were significantly higher than the norm (P<0.01). The scores of greater yang, balanced yin-yang and less yang personalities in male group were significantly higher than those in female group (P<0.01). while the scores of greater yin personality were significantly lower than those in female group (P<0.01). The scores of less yang personality in both groups showed no significant difference (P>0.05). The scores of less yang personality in city and county group were significantly higher than those in country group (P<0.01), while the scores of greater yang, balanced yin-yang, less yin and greater yin personalities in both groups showed no significant difference (P>0.05).â‘¡In all the samples, the scores of SCL-90 were significantly lower than national norm (P< 0.01). The scores of SCL-90 in male group were significantly lower than those in female group (P< 0.01). The scores of physical change in city and county group were significantly higher than those in country group (P< 0.01), while the scores of sensitive interpersonal relationship and fear were significantly lower than those in country group. The scores of force, depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoia and psychoticism in both groups showed no significant difference (P>0.05).â‘¢As for the effects on greater yang personality, the order of importance, from the most to the least, was hostility, sensitive interpersonal relationship, psychoticism, depression, physical change, paranoia, others, anxiety, fear and force, among which the importance of hostility, sensitive interpersonal relationship and psychoticism was higher than 50%; as for the effects on lesser yang personality, the order of importance, from the most to the least, was hostility, paranoia, anxiety, sensitive interpersonal relationship, others, fear, depression, psychoticism, physical change and force, among which the importance of hostility, paranoia, anxiety and sensitive interpersonal relationship was above 50%; as for the effects on balanced yin-yang personality, the order of importance, from the most to the least, was sensitive interpersonal relationship, fear, hostility, psychoticism, others, paranoia, depression, force, physical change and anxiety; the importance of each was greater than 50%; as for the effects on lesser yin personality, the order of importance, from the most to the least, was hostility, depression, sensitive interpersonal relationship, force, fear, physical change, paranoia, psychoticism, anxiety and others, among which the importance of hostility, depression, sensitive interpersonal relationship and force was higher than 60% and that of the others was lower than 50%; as for the effects on greater yin personality, the order of importance, from the most to the least, was depression, force, psychoticism, sensitive interpersonal relationship, others, anxiety, hostility, paranoia, fear and physical change, among which the importance of depression, force, psychoticism, sensitive interpersonal relationship, others, anxiety, hostility was paranoia above 50% and that of depression, force and psychoticism was above 65%. In addition, it was found that sensitive interpersonal relationship had greater effect on each dimension of Five-Pattern Personality. The finding was different from the previous studies on sensitive factors and personal characteristics, and its interpretation needs further study. Conclusions:â‘ The personality and mental health of students in TCM universities and colleges are better than national norm.â‘¡The mental health of males is better than that of females.â‘¢With the development of the society and economy, the differences between students from cities and countries and those from countries are reducing.â‘£ANNs can be applied in psychology to process data with greater accuracy, further proving the correlation between personality characteristics and mental health. |
