The translation text is taken from the first chapter of Neural Networks and Pattern Recognition(NNPR).The main contents include polynomial fitting, probability theory, selection model, dimension disaster, and decision theory.Over the last ten years, dramatic growths in practical applications for machine learning has been accompanied by multiple important developments in algorithms and techniques. As a result, machine learning has gained popularity both at home and abroad.NNPR is a classic book in the artificial intelligence and focuses on the neural network algorithm and its large-scale practical applications. The translation of this chapter exerts positive implications on and lays mathematical foundation in the for artificial intelligence learning in China. To solve the translation difficulties of complicated sentences, the article has selected Liu Miqing's English-Chinese contrastive study theory as the theoretical guidance. The main translation methods are the text shift approaches through introducing idea pivot and form pivot concepts and its application in analysis of semantic logics, sentence structure and sentence logical expansion. As for the five text structure types including cause and effect, parataxis, previous statement and transitional expression and topic expansion, the author has adopted multiple text analysis strategies such as syntactic analysis, sequence adjustment and functional word usage.Besides, the author has taken communicative approaches such as supplement, conversion and omission to enhance the text readability.Besides, the author has consulted authoritative dictionaries and online authoritative databases and adopted parallel text comparison and literature review to improve the accuracy of target text. This translation practice report covers the terminology translation,Chinese-English text differences, and English-Chinese translation of scientific book in the hope of providing reference for similar translation practices.
