The inland navigation in the south of Yangtze River, undertaking heavy transport, such as goods circulation, towns communication, business travel, have developed since ancient times. Based on the research of the development and change of the inland navigation system between Shanghai and Hangzhou, this thesis makes study mainly about the economic and social interaction.Firstly, the advantaged conditions of inland navigation, netty water transport routes, various type of ships, these all adapted to the sustainable development of inland navigation.As the result, the great change of the inland navigation happened, especially the streamer's introduction, on the basis of the previous development. Secondly, it makes observation and research about social and economic interaction between Shanghai and Hangzhou based on the inland navigation, emphasizing on the details and microcosmic observation, and shows the importance of the inland navigation in the economic interaction in Shanghai-Hangzhou region with the examples of tea, silk cocoons and other things. Again, with above-mentioned argument for basis point, it reveals that inland navigation play an important role in the rise, development and transformation of town along Shanghai, Hangzhou and Jiaxing. Finally, it analyzes the interaction between social-economic transition and inland navigation based on the change of inland navigation system from four aspects:environmental change, teahouse industry, holidayentertainment, social ideas.With the geographical superiority and developed inland shipping industry, economic interaction also promoted the social and cultural interaction in these areas and thus exerted a far-reaching and long-lasting influence on the social and economic changes in the area of Shanghai-Hangzhou.
