Ever since the Opium War, western culture and its economy stimulate China's traditional culture continuously, so does the music. The 20th century saw those dramatic changes in the era of turbulence. He Lvting, the influential and famous music composer, theorist, educator and activist in the 20th century, devoted his life to music creation and education, and made tremendous contributions to the music culture in modern China. With rich themes, varied styles and precise language, taking"national character"as the guiding ideology, his works truly practiced the spiritual content of integrating ancient and modern, Chinese and western cultures, while combining the western compositional techniques. Based on the background of turbulent times and the theory of early Chinese aesthetics, his work reflected the true life back then as well as people's inner thoughts. His work has passed from generation to generation due to its simple national style and distinctive character of the times. He is not only an outstanding composer, but also a theoretician, educator. Guided with"modernity"music theory, he blazed a new way for Chinese music, and also formed a unique system of Chinese national music theory, which has been inherited and developed for the future generations. After searching the collection of literature, this paper analyzes He lvting's music of early 20th century, from the perspective of the metropolis of Shanghai. This paper discusses the creation of his early musical background and creative thinking and cultural origins to further study the creative ideas of modern and traditional aesthetics as well as its impact on Chinese music circle. By analyzing the early music of He Lvting, this paper hopes that people would understand the development of Chinese 20th century music and have reference to the Chinese musical culture while the descendants are doing some musical practice and creative activities.
