The 20th Century Irish author James Joyce wrote about Dublin and its inhabitants all his life. The goal of Joyce's works and life was the development of the self, and the creation and development of the image of self. Joyce'uniqueness as an author was precisely because of this. This paper seeks to use the perspective of the creation of the image of self to closely examine the author's early novels, and through an analysis of Joyce's early works, hopes to discover something inspiring and valuable in the area of research into the relations between author and work of literature. It is precisely this strong push towards the creation and development of the image of self that makes Joyce stand out among authors.Almost all of Joyce's works contain an element of the autobiographical, and cast a vivid consciousness of'self; every work has at its center the author's portrayal of the soul, the self; the creation of the image of self has already become the author's goal in all his works. In real life, the main characteristics of Joyce's ideals and behavior are:the commingling of reality and unreality, the heroic understanding of the self, the choice of exile and art as a way of living, as well as the dramatization of the concept of character.Works of literature as a sign from the author's subconscious are a salient and powerful type of evidence in the field of research into the life of an author. Joyce's uniqueness is precisely due to the commingling of reality and unreality, and Joyce's works are famous for directly describing the world of the soul, and his later works are even more prone to using fragmented language to describe humanity's psychological world. The psychoanalytical field, which developed contemporaneously with Joyce, places importance on every mental event emanating from the human soul, and sees them as being in cause and effect relationships; every display of psychological detail is worth examining, and can be directly attached to the psychological chain and therefore participates in the creation of a complete psychological activity; at the same time, the subconscious directly below the conscious is the main element in the development of the psyche; there exists an internal driving force that sets our psychological development in motion and directs our actions; an individual's childhood years have a definitive and formative effect on his or her lifelong development; all relationships between individuals and others are subjective relationship, and most important are an individual's childhood relationships with his or her family members. By examining Joyce's early work Dubliners and his autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as the most direct display of Joyce's early development of self and creation of its image, this paper will use Joyce's works as a blueprint, to combine Joyce's key characteristics in real life, from the internal and external factors influencing the structure of Joyce's image of self, namely original motivation and the perspective of the Irish family model, and research Joyce's development of self and creation of its image.
