Contemporary somatic theory describes that body is not just something of individual physiological characteristic for that it also bears the weight of multiple meanings such as individual thought, opinion, emotion and spirit. By adoption of this theory, the vestige of double disciplines resulted from factors as society, history, politics, culture and ethics can be reflected. Body in literary works is a fundamental factor of construction of literary world as well as a valid dimension to pry into the meaning and value of an author's literary creation.In Zong Pu's literary creation, the bodies of intellectuals are an indispensable view. She does not just depict the physical disease of intellectuals but also present physical transformation and persecution imposed on intellectuals of different timesThe essay can be divided into five parts.The introductory part clarities the reason and value of the topic selection from the relationship among "body", philosophy and literature.The first chapter analyzes intellectuals'body encounters under Zong Pu's description. The transformed bodies appear to be restless and exist in name only where abandonment of individuality is clearly showed. The persecuted boy shows that intellectuals discard personal awareness to become political vassal under the threats of persecution and death. Body with disease is mainly displayed as inevitable desperate circumstances under the condition of physical disease as well as reconsideration and the spiritual characteristics of inner spiritual introspection of society in this situation.The second chapter investigates the topic that individual surrender when be faced with physical encounters. The major somatic surrender is bow to state ideology and all kinds of executive mechanisms. Under the influence of state ideology, body becomes a collective vassal and no longer expresses individual desire; under the cruel punishment of executive mechanism, body is in a situation of morbid surrender and follows the main ideological stream instinctively.The third chapter discusses an adherent condition that an individual shows when confronted with somatic misery, which mainly refers to insistence to selfhood when be encountered with regulation and punishment of authority. Suicidal and transformed somatic encounters express the ultimate appeal to defend selfhood by intellectuals; Experience with disease and love shows a rational examination to social history and a pursuance of selfhood.Conclusion gives a brief account on the value and meaning of somatic writing in Zong Pu's novel.
