During the 1950s to 1970s, the cold war between USA and USSR with their manned lunar exploration had been a catalyst that fueled this extraordinary innovation on many fronts. One of the most important events was the first artificial satellite orbited by the Soviet. The coming of the space age affected deeply human being's way of producing, way of living, even the policy-making of nation states and structure of international relationship was affected. The superpower ignitted a phenomenal sequence of technological advances on both side. Rocketry and spacecraft design advanced quickly, allowing for manned orbital flights beginning in 1961, for the manned lunar exploration in the later. The space age, combined with the Cold War, ultimately changed the process of human development. As a space power, the manned lunar exploration was most deeply conditioned by the Cold War international situation. That is, the Cold War fundamentally changed the original trace of USA's and USSR's space policy, whereas, the space age and the space powers'policy-making changed the Cold War's depth and extent, and in some degree the essence of the Cold War.This dissertation employed a great deal of rare documents and many second-hand books for reference. It was the main purpose of this dissertation to trace the changing of space race between USA and USSR, to reveal what the Cold War had put on manned lunar exploration in space race, and as a result of interaction,to make know the relationship among human society, politics, economy and cuture.I mainly discuss the following four parts. The first part discuss in detail and systemically on the backdrops, course and impacts of space race, expecting to have an comprehensive understanding in Cold War between USA and USSR.The second part dwells on Kennedy's decision-making about Apollo project. Comparing Khrushclev's attitude with Kennedy's, the Soviet Union's decision about manned lunar exploration is in two minds. The most impotant of reasons is that, Kennedy tried to sound Khrushclev out and get a feeling for whether the two nations could undertake a joint manned lunar exploration. The third part introduces the courses about Apollo project from 1961 to 1972. In other hand, I describ competition between USA and USSR in manned lunar exploration, especially the Soviet Union's inside conflict and its unknown history. The last,I will discuss the partnership—a history of Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, which is the uniquely cooperation between USA and USSR in space race. The forth part specifically analyzes the impacts of events.that the manned lunar competition is an interesting phenomenon in Cold War. The fist area is why USSR failed in manned lunar exploration. I will give some explanations about it. The second area,we discuss why there is no winner in space race and Cold War.
