There is a long history of cultural exchanges between China and Japan, for it's not long distance between the two countries. As the result of failure for the war between China and Japan in 1904-1905, the Qing government regarded studying from Japan as an important way to save the nation. At that time, a large number of Chinese students went to Japan to study. Therefore, it came to be a popular phenomenon in the early 20th century.This phenomenon promoted cultural exchanges between China and Japan. Ling Nan school of painting that was directly affected by the Japanese painting so that included many Japan factors. This is a special observation point for us to learn cultural exchanges between China and Japan in recent times.The founders of the Ling Nan School of Painting was Gao Jian-fu, Gao Qi-feng and Chen Shu-ren. In their early ages, they all got quite good education for the traditional painting because of that they got the chance to study paintings from the famous traditional artist whose name was Ju Lian who lived in Guangdong. In the early 20th century, the very three person chose studying painting from Japan. Although Jian-fu and Qi-feng couldn't study from the formal art school in Japan, they study painting from "Japanese White Horse Association" "Pacific Art Association" and other new painting group. On the contrary, Chen Shu-ren had the chance studied and graduated from the arts and crafts school in the Jingdu city of Japan. They chose the Reform painter "zhu ne qi feng" as their important teacher. In Japan, they got the education which was Western painting and Japan Compromise painting. Watched Japan's painting very prosperity, the version of reform China's painting came in their mind.The time when the very three people return to China, they began to change the traditional painting immediately. They propagandized their revolution ideas such as "connect China and the West, contain the past and today", "art should be in people, people should be drawer" by exhibition and publishing the painting books. They thought their painting as "new nation painting" or "compromise painting", on the other hand, the afterward call it "Ling Nan school of painting". The very special time, made the art not only contain the art itself.it also include some relative aspects which were art educational, art technology and so on.As for born from Japan,art education and art technology were deeply affected by Japan.Ling Nan school of painting which was affected by Japan growth rapidly. This phenomenon made the traditional painters scare. They built "Gui hai cooperate association" firstly, and then established "Guangdong painting research association" For the "Japan factors", there came to be a controversy in the painting area which lasted quite a long time. In the controversy, the traditional painters gave them powerful offensive but can't hold up the Ling Nan school of art. To our surprise, Ling Nan school of art didn't go along with the "compromise painting" road, only chose to turn back to the traditional for a series of reasons. The undulation of Ling Nan school of painting in the painting area, it reacts the process of the foreign culture mix with Chinese traditional culture which are affected by kinds of factors.
