Abstract:Farmers' painting is the product of Chinese neoteric culture, of which trend was tided by public and represented by the mob. As a symbolic affair and art, farmers' painting has its great value for research. This paper tried to use a neutral approach to make an explicit explanation about the Chinese farmers' painting, with the help of the five years' data by field work, plenty of paintings as well as its history. The dissertation set up a frame from three points of view, the politics, the region and the folk, tried to explain the double attributes of farmers' painting, which could be generalized as social attribute and artistic attribute, in order to revert a true folk. The process of its outset was totally a product of political cartoon, which reflected the delicate relation between order of power and expression of culture. Famers' painting pertained to the culture revolution, but gained particular technique and language of painting. The inner aspect, such as brushwork, composition, color and sculpt, make a metaphor of the community. After the Culture Revolution, farmers' painting began to face a transition, which changed to folk style. This promoted it to absorb local tradition and folk custom. The government played an important role in this process, they build up department, exploit the market, organize painters to find out symbol of tradition. During this period, farmers' painting has a great progress in economy, but more and more paintings began to fabricate in a rough way, which is watchful by both painters and organizers. On a whole, farmers' painting is painted by farmers, who were born among the folk. In the end of this dissertation, the author went back to this position, in order to discuss the following question:what is a true folk? The painting expressed aboriginal thought and an active attitude toward life. Furthermore, farmers always have a pragmatic attitude, which make them follow the request of the market or the trend of thought. Nowadays, some painters express their own thought in order to wake up the ignorance of the folk, maybe this phenomenon will give this field a new point of view.
