Han Fen Lou: Essays on Literature, by Wu Zengqi, puts great emphasis on the cultivation of the qualities and abilities of authors. He aims to teach how to write by enhancing the authors in their capabilities of perceiving, expressiveness, planning the composition and aesthetics. This thesis is divided according to the four"capabilities"prompted by Wu, and investigates his contribution of inheriting and developing the ancient theories of composition, as well as the light he sheds upon contemporary literary writings. The augmentation of the thesis is to be unfolded in six aspects:The introduction gives a brief account of the background, and the rationale of theories of Han Fen Lou: Essays on Literature. This part is worked upon a literature review of this book, thus facilitating the perspective and methodology of textual analysis of this thesis. The current studies of Han Fen Lou: Essays on Literature stay on the preliminary phase of translation and introduction, without any dig investigation of its theoretical value. Therefore, this thesis adopts a methodology of comparative analysis, and gives priority to the studies of the theory of"author's attainment", in light of the writing features of Han Fen Lou: Essays on Literature, whose style and some entries are akin to The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons by Liu Xie.The first chapter discusses the author's perceiving abilities. The learning and self-cultivation of the authors serve as a primary foundation of the train of thought. Taking this as the prerequisite, the authors manage to prompt a natural mind of"nothing and no-self", and arrives at a different epistemological end on the recipients'side, through the thinking of subjective initiative, and the proper guidance of writing wisdom. The authors can effectively cope with the choices in their writings by enhancing their perceiving abilities. The second chapter discusses the author's expressive abilities. The different manners of expression dictate broadly different writing styles. The authors are supposed to pick a most congenial manner of expression, and adopt the proper rhetorical techniques, thus accomplishing the mission of"writing on the target". Meanwhile, the authors are required of a comprehensive consideration of the syllables and meters to write in an elegant style, essays or parallel proses they are writing. The authors thus manage to link the objects they perceive to the proper language and expressions, by enhancing their capabilities of expression. The third chapter discusses the author's abilities of planning a composition. Not only are the authors possessed with a clear awareness of the styles, they are also required of the abilities to plan an entire composition. By achieving this they can have a better mastery of the structure of the composition, by putting the core in the foreground and arranging the major and minor issues. Moreover, the authors should cultivate their abilities of"melting and trimming", making sure of the logic and structural intactness of the composition. The authors, by enhancing their abilities of planning a composition, can seek for the best style and technique of expressing their ideas and choose proper styles for their writings. The fourth chapter discusses the aesthetic ability of the authors. The authors are supposed to accumulate the basic sensible materials for their writings, by actively using their aesthetic feelings. Besides, they should also be aware of the influence of aesthetic preferences upon writing styles. The authors should develop an aesthetic of neutralization, thus attaining the writing ideals of"moderation as beauty". The authors, by enhancing their aesthetic abilities, can discover the essence of aesthetic objects, and upgrade the phases from sensitive to rational. The fifth chapter concludes the achievement of"author's attainment"as developed in Han Fen Lou: Essays on Literature. Wu Zengqi, despite of the prevailing traditional theories of vagueness and generalization, insists that the judgment of authors is attained through their own writings and perceiving, which serve as a great enlightenment for contemporary writers and learners.
