Cai Yuanpei was a famous revolutionist, educatiomst and thinker in modem history of China. He has been known as the thought of incorporating things of diverse nature?which greatly improved the education and social progress of that times ,what philosophical basis he posted the thought was based on,is the main idea the text seeks. The whole text mainly has three parts. The first stresses and analyses the three meanings of incorporating things of diverse nature?.(l) On education Education should have independent qualifications. (2) On learning Learning should be free. (3) On value The thought of running a school totally tended to pursue progress. The second specially probes into the basis of philosophical methodology of the thought of running a school. The article tries to expound the thought on literal sense of philosophy, both of the worlds, five items of education, elying upon aesthetic education instead of religion?and integrating scientific spirit with social ideal, discussed by Mr Cai, from Marxist stand, viewpoint and methods. These emit the thoughts of materialism and dialectics. The third mainly expounds Mr Cai's doctrine of the mean and the cultural standpoint of Chinese and Western, which identify with the thought of "incorporating things of diverse nature" In short, the thought of running a school is a crystallization of merging Chinese and Western culture, and in turn promotes the cultural exchange and development of Chinese and Western.
