AbstractSong Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty are the very important historical periods of Chinese classical opera development from its early stage into its maturity. During these two dynasties, a large number of fine pieces of operas was emerging and has been on people's lips through the ages. Among of those fine works, specially, Wang Shifu's the Romance of the Western Chamber has been immortal and become a well-known masterpiece in the world. In the past seven hundreds years it has attracted a number of Chinese art researchers and the researchers from all over the world to study. This paper, based upon the achievement done by previous studies, will further explore the impact of social and historic cultural changes on Chinese classical opera and on Wang Shifu's creative works. Also it will study the valuable intention of social refonnation and aesthetic ideas through discussing a progressive aesthetic idea presented by the Romance of the Western Chamber. The purpose of this paper is to get a deeper understanding and recognition on the ideological significance and cultural connotation of the Romance of the Western Chamber.
