This paper makes a research on the causes of ambiguity from three aspects: lexical ambiguity, syntactic ambiguity and pragmatic ambiguity.About lexical ambiguity, our analysis is taken from the aspect of polysemla of words to that of levels of word meaning. About syntactic ambiguity, we apply the theory of "scale and category grammar", which is fton~ Systemic-Functional Grammar, to analyze it according to metafunctions and ranks of lexeme-syntax structure. In addition, the paper makes a further discussion about "mixed ambiguity" which is generated by interaction of structure and semanteme. As to pragmatic ambiguity, we convey the point of view that "context plays a role in the generation of ambiguity". Through the analysis of ambiguity, we've found that lexeme, syntax and context play their roles respectively. Generally speaking, the following elements are required for the generation of ambiguity:(I)on somanteme: polysemia of words, various collocation of words and levels of word-meaning.(2)on syntax: multi-valued verbs, various relations and levels in structure.(3)on context: possibilities for reasonable pragmatic explanations. The paper, in which the analysis of the causes of ambiguity are made, aims at a better understanding of ambiguity and avoidance of it since ambiguity causes misunderstanding in communication.
