Chinese Predicate Bin / Modification Structure Ambiguity

This paper tries to give a systemic description and analysis on the ambiguous structures of narrative-object/modifier-noun phrases in contemporary Chinese and tries to find the causes by which this type of ambiguous structures come into being and to analysis the main three ambiguity structures. In order to combine the theoretical analyses with the practical investigations and to get a further understanding of the narrative-object phrases and modifier-noun phrases, the writer investigates the ambiguity grade of the ambiguous structures by means of questionnaire. This paper mainly consists of four chapters. The first one generally shows the meaning of this study .Based on the existed study, the writer proposes her own study idea. In the second chapter, the writer investigates the ambiguity structures involved one by one and gives the causes of such type of ambiguity structures. Firstly, the writer points out how these structures being ambiguous, and gives a comprehensive description and a particular analysis on the three main ambiguity structure :"V+N","V+ X+DE+N2","V+ SL+DE+N2"and their sub categorizations. This paper tries to find the condition by which the potential ambiguity turns into a practical ambiguity and to give some sub categorizations of the verbs and the nouns in the ambiguity phrases. Meanwhile, the writer tries to give a resolution to those ambiguity phrases. At last, the writer gives an explanation to the"V+N","V+ N1+DE+N2"with the theory of Word Order Universals .In the third chapter, the writer mainly investigates the ambiguity grade of those structures. The writer investigates the relative ambiguity grade and absolute ambiguity grade of all the ambiguity phrases mentioned in the paper. The investigation results of the ambiguity grade roughly agree with the result of existed conclusion and the study of this paper is of great significance in the approaches for disambiguation in Natural Language Procession. In the last chapter, the writer sums up the main research conclusion of the formal three chapters and gives a plan of the further study. The study tries to get a comprehensive understanding on the ambiguity of the narrative-object/modifier-noun, which also represents the idea of this paper. This paper tries to combine the theoretical analyses with the practical investigations and to make the study of it become of great importance in the approaches for the language teaching and the disambiguation in Natural Language Processing.
