"shi" Auxiliary Research

The auxiliary verb is a group of words belonging to verb,and it has its own particular grammatical function. The paper stud-ies all the auxiliary verbs in Shi Shuo Xin Yu, and makes an analy-sis about them from three aspects, that is sytactics, semanhcs, andpragmatics. And three points have been got and they are stated inthe following.First, comparing with the auxiliary verb in the periods beforeOin Dynasty, we find the auxilivi verb got a great development inthe middle ancient time. For this development, a most importantspecificity is the product of some new words, just like the using of" yao, ying", and the sentence pattern " Auxiliary Verb + Vp +bu?" These indicate that the grammatical function of the auxiliaryverbs is being perfected.Second, in the process of language deve1opment there exists alaw - the langUage is tending to simplicity and to complex at thesame time. These two tendencies can be implemented withoutcoming into condict. The basic reason for this law is to wake the ex-...pression clearer and ny to express all kinds of mood, in order tosuit the pragmatics and meet the demand of communication.Third, during the development of the auxiliary verb, the con-troI of semantics plays an important role. We could see that with thetwo explaintions: (i) the structure of t, Auxiliary Verb + Vp" is adecisive factor which causes the common verbs shifting into the aux-iliary verbs. (ii) the joint -- using -- of auxiliary verbs promotes theproduct of the new words.
