The thesis concentrates its attention on character names translationin Hawkes' version of"The Story of the Stone" whose original is one ofChinese literature classics. David Hawkes successfully reproduced thesenames which are knitted in a complicated net. The thesis is divided into 6parts:The research starts from reviewing character names in literary worksand points out that character names in literary works are writers' device forcharacterization and realization of themes. So translators can't ignore them.Then the thesis gives a general introduction of translation approaches usuallyused in the translation of names. The third part gives a detailed introduction ofvarious names appearing in the novel with focus on their cultural and literarymeanings. The fourth part is the core part. Here, a full list of translationpatterns is presented with explanation of some specific translation techniquesused in the translation. The fifth part makes an objective evaluation of thetranslation with reference to Peter Newmark's translation criticism formula.The last part, which is not the least important part, discusses 3 conclusions onthe name translation in literary works.
