《红楼梦》典故翻译翻译策略"重写"理论 and the languages they work with. Lefevere mainly explored constraints exerted by ideology, poetics, patronage and universe of discourse on translators. This dissertation first probes into the sources and functions of the allusions in the source text; then a research model is worked out based on the research model about the classification of allusions and their respective potential translation strategies proposed by the Finnish scholar Ritva Leppihalme. Using this working model, this dissertation conducts a systematic research on the translation of allusions in The Story Of The Story from the perspective of AndréLefevere's rewriting theory, using Yang Xian-yi's translation as a contrast. The research method in this study includes documentation, statistical analysis and contrastive analysis. The research aims to explore the translation strategies used by David Hawkes and John Minford to deal with problems arising on allusion translation, and how factors postulated by AndréLefevere such as ideology, poetics, patronage and universe of discourse influence the translators'translation strategies.According to the researching results, David Hawkes and John Minford rewrite more of the source text to make their translation fit the ideology, the poetics, and the universe of discourse that are acceptable to the western reader. The Story Of The Stone was a particular product of the time in which the translation was taking place, a mediation of the ST system and the TT system. Adjustments and rewritings made to the translation are a transitional strategy employed by the translators to introduce the Chinese culture and Chinese literature to the western reader at a time when common westerners knew little about China. Lastly, some translation strategies dealing with problems that arise on allusion translation are proposed on the basis of the statistical analysis of the allusion translation in The Story Of The Stone. Hopefully this study can contribute to Hongloumeng Translation Studies, and especially to allusion translation of the novel.
