Nowadays, the mental health, especially for under-achievers, has become more and more important and urgent in school education. With the aid of the Tape-aided Fault-finding Test (TFT, designed by the author), the study is aimed to investigate the Sustaining Ability of Attention(SAA) of primary school students from grade 1 to grade 3 and intended to improve the SAA of under-achievers after special trainings. The research provides theoretical basis and practical experience for future research and application. The study composes of two parts: first it samples 824 students of grade 1-3 from three different primary schools in order to find out the SAA of under-achievers and their difference from excellent students, and to analyze the relationship between SAA and learning performance, SAA and Raven reasoning ability. The second part treats 46 under-achievers in two groups with particularly-designed psychological training, compares and analyzes their SAA before and after the training. The result shows that: 1. TFT is an efficient tool to measure the SAA of children from 6 to 10. 2. There exists significant difference in SAA between under-achiever and Excellent Students. The students with high level of SAA have made significantly better learning performance than those with low level. 3. Children抯 SAA develops rapidly from 6 to 10. There are significant variances of SAA level in different individual, age and gender. 4. SAA has low relationship with the level of learning performance, and middle relationship with the level of Raven Reasoning Ability 5. Systematical psychological training will help to improve SAA as well as learning performance of under-achievers aged from 6 to 10. Ling Guangming Directed by Wang Wenyin...
