Transfer is originally a psychological term which means the influence exerted by one kind of study activity on another. In this thesis, transfer is transplanted into translation theory to mean the influence exerted by one culture on another through the medium of translation. To research on translation theories in a multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary way has become an important tendency; moreover, translation and culture constitute an interrelated and interactive system, thus the transplantation of transfer is both possible and necessary. There are many kinds of transfer exerted on cultures by translation. This thesis classifies and discusses the following different forms according to different standards and dimensions: forward transfer and backward transfer; surface transfer and deep transfer; horizontal transfer and vertical transfer; positive transfer, negative transfer and zero transfer. The exertion of transfer is restricted by many factors: original works, translation strategies and methods, translator, difference between cultures, comparative positions and interactive relations of cultures and transfer load. All these factors make up a complicated and inter- linked restricting mechanism. Meanwhile, the backward transfer of culture on translation also shouldn抰 be neglected since culture not only decides the scale and manner of translation but also interferes in the translation process. Because of the complexity of culture and the diversity of the factors involved in translation, the research on transfer will remain a long-term and arduous task.
